from digging to the next stage

excavation that fits the project

A building footprint, a planned utility route, and an area that needs backfilling each call for a different approach. Start with what you are building or improving, and we’ll discuss the excavation work needed to move it forward.

01 / RESHAPE

Foundation & Building Excavation

Plan the digging for a home, garage, addition, or other building project. Share the layout and any plans from your builder so the excavation can be discussed around the footprint, elevations, equipment access, and next stage of construction.

02 / REPLENISH

Utility Trenching & Excavation

Prepare for the excavation portion of a planned utility project. Tell us what service is involved, the proposed route, and which contractor or provider is handling the installation so the digging and follow-on work can be coordinated.

03 / MANAGE WATER

Backfilling & Material Handling

Plan what happens to the excavated material and how the area should be left. Discuss material to keep or haul away, any fill needed, and the backfilling and grading required after the construction or utility work is ready for it.

a clear picture before the digging

the right questions before we break ground

The size of the dig is only part of the job. What is being installed, how equipment reaches the area, and what needs to happen afterward all help define the work. These four details are a useful place to start.

01

what is going in the ground?

Tell us whether the excavation is for a building, a utility route, or another improvement. Share the intended use and any drawings so the work can be discussed around the actual project.

03

How Will Equipment Reach the Site?

Share photos of the entrance and route to the work area. Gates, slopes, overhead obstacles, turning room, and space for excavated material help us understand the access before planning the job.

02

Where Does the Work Need to Happen?

Show the building location or proposed route and the features around it. Existing structures, buried services, trees, and property limits can affect the space available for the excavation.

04

What Happens After the Dig?

Let us know who is handling the next stage and how the area should be left. Installation, inspections, backfilling, hauling, and surface restoration need to fit together in the agreed sequence.

coordinate the dig with what comes next

Excavation is often one part of a larger job. If you already have a builder, plumber, electrician, or utility provider involved, share their plans and requirements when you reach out. Clear responsibilities help everyone work toward the same result.

BEFORE EXCAVATION

Layout, Access & Existing Utilities

Confirm the work limits, project specifications, equipment route, and utility-location arrangements before digging begins.

BEFORE BACKFILLING

Installation & Required Checks

Identify who handles the utility materials, installation, connections, and any testing or inspections. The scope should make clear when the excavation is ready to be backfilled.

AT COMPLETITION

Material, Grading & Surface Finish

Agree on what stays, what leaves, and the intended finish. Rough grading, topsoil, stone, and other restoration work should be identified in the quote where needed.

start with the project you have in mind

from your plans to a clear scope

Step one

Share the location & goal

Tell us where the property is and what you need excavated. Photos, approximate dimensions, drawings, and your preferred timing help explain the job. You can contact us before every detail is settled.

Step two

Review the site & sequence

We’ll discuss access, ground conditions, excavated material, and the next stage of work. A site assessment may be needed before pricing. Share any contractor or utility-provider requirements already available.

Step three

Agree on scope & timing

Review the excavation limits, included services, material handling, and expected finish. Scheduling should account for project readiness and any installation or inspection steps that affect the work.

excavation & utility work questions

Start with what you know about the property and the proposed work. We can discuss the information needed to define the excavation and coordinate it with the rest of the project.

Do I need finished plans before contacting you?

No. Start with the location, intended use, and a description of the work. Photos and rough dimensions help with the first conversation. Drawings, elevations, or utility-provider requirements may be needed before the excavation can be priced or scheduled.

Can you coordinate with my builder or utility contractor?

Yes. Share who is involved, the plans or specifications they have provided, and the proposed timing. We can discuss the excavation alongside their work so access, installation, inspections, and backfilling are considered in the project sequence.

Does a utility excavation quote include the line installation and connections?

Those responsibilities need to be identified in the scope. Tell us whether you need excavation support for an installer or want to discuss a broader project. We’ll confirm Nathan Excavating’s part and which installation, testing, or connection tasks are being handled by others.

Who arranges utility marking before excavation?

OHIO811 states that the person performing the excavation must submit the notification before digging. Some privately owned lines may need a separate locator. Share any information you have about buried services when discussing the project. See OHIO811’s homeowner guidance for details.

What affects the cost of excavation or trenching?

The size and depth of the excavation, ground conditions, equipment access, existing utilities, material handling, and required finish all affect the scope. Utility or building specifications can also change the work involved. Photos help start the discussion; a site assessment may be needed before an estimate.

Will backfilling and restoration be included?

Discuss the finish you need when requesting a quote. Backfilling, hauling, grading, and replacement surface material should be listed where they are part of the job. Tell us whether the area will become lawn, driveway, a building site, or another surface so the scope reflects that use.

ready to get the machines moving?

Share your property location, the excavation you need, and your preferred timing. If a builder or utility contractor is already involved, let us know so we can discuss the work together.
